Is selective pallet rack the same thing as pallet rack?

Almost always, yes. When someone asks for pallet racks with no other description, they mean selective: single-deep rows, an aisle on each side, direct access to every position. Pushback, drive-in, and pallet flow are higher-density alternatives you'd choose instead, not variations on the same system.

How does push back racking compare to drive-in rack?

Both store deep from one face. With pushback the forklift stays in the aisle and gravity does the work, which is faster and gentler on the structure. Drive-in goes deeper and costs less per position, but the driver has to enter the lane to place and pull loads.

How does pallet flow compare to pushback rack?

Flow gives you true FIFO but needs an aisle on both ends of the lane. Pushback runs LIFO and works from a single aisle. If rotation drives the operation, flow wins; if floor space is the binding constraint, pushback usually does.

What's the difference between drive-in and drive-through rack?

Drive-in is open at one end and runs LIFO - highest density. Drive-through is open at both ends and allows FIFO, at the cost of some positions and a second access aisle.

How is cantilever rack different from pallet rack?

Pallet rack has a front beam and stores discrete, boxed loads. Cantilever has an open front, so long material loads from the side and slides in without clearing an obstruction - that's the entire reason the system exists.

How is it different from static shelving?

On static shelving, a picker reaches into the bay and someone has to physically face the product afterward. Carton flow feeds from behind and presents at the front, so rotation is automatic and the pick position never moves.

Choosing Between Rack Types

Four things decide the answer: how many SKUs you carry, how many pallets you hold of each one, how fast product turns, and how much height the building gives you.

Many SKUs with a pallet or two each point to selective pallet rack. Several pallets of the same item favor pushback. Date-driven rotation calls for pallet flow. Large volumes of a few items in a tight footprint suit drive-in. Long material needs cantilever, and case picking needs carton flow.
